ELECTRONICS.CA PUBLICATIONS, the electronics industry market research and knowledge network, announces the availability of a market tracker report entitled "DSP Market Tracker. Quarterly Report ".
The DSP market has been thriving for some time now thanks to the mobile phone application market. Today, the demand for smart phones that requires a microprocessor for the applications, has significantly limited the growth opportunities for DSP used in this space. Suppliers have responded to this by offering ARM Processors with integrated DSP function. DSPs are used in many other application markets including wireless infrastructure, automotive navigation and imaging systems. This tracker provides demand statistics for DSPs. Sales of these products will reach close to $6 billion this year.
Current Trends
• DSP revenue is expected to grow by 12 to 13 percent annually, for 2010 and for next year; expect to see the highest revenue for this year during the third quarter, with a slight decline seen by the final quarter.
• Asia Pacific is still the geographical production and consumption center of DSP activity.
• Most DSP revenue comes from the communications market, but the consumer electronics market for DSP is growing faster.
• There is a lot of progress being made in DSP design, including more of a systems perspective, and combining fixed point and floating point technologies.
• Texas Instruments is the dominant supplier of DSP products.
Highlights
The Asia Pacific region is the most important geographical area for DSP products. Asia Pacific alone accounts for 63 percent of global revenue share on an estimated $3.7 billion for this year, and it is also the fastest growing region with a CAGR of 9 percent over the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is an important region for DSP due to the great number of mobile handsets and other electronics being produced there that are utilizing DSPs in their designs. Most of the revenue is coming from the communications segment, with significant amounts coming from consumer electronics and also from the computer segment. High consuming applications for the region include mobile phones, base stations, and equipment used in wireless networking.
There is significant growth happening on the production side because of the many factories there, in China and Taiwan especially, but also in Korea, and in places like Vietnam as well. There is also substantial future growth anticipated as a result of demand coming from consumption and the demand for more end products.
A lot of the consumer demand is coming from China, which still has a general population. Aside from just the basic need to communicate, the Chinese cell phone market is also being driven by the improved Internet connectivity that is now emerging just over the last six years. The Internet and related industries have shown much growth in the Chinese market.
For the Asia Pacific region, DSP revenue growth year over year is expected to reach 17 percent, with higher percentage of that growth occurring in the third quarter of this year, which shows a 13 percent revenue increase over the second quarter. For the third quarter of this year, practically all of the growth in DSP revenue is expected to come from the Asia Pacific region. Japan will see enough growth in the third quarter of this year to remain flat, and is expected to show 5 percent decline for 2010.
