Latest Issue: Q1-2012 Computer Market Tracker
The computer market for semiconductors includes all any devices that are used inside desktops, notebooks, tablets, printers, storage, POS terminals, and any other computer peripherals. We expect that this market will reach $91.73 billion in global sales. This will be a slight increase of 4 percent in sales from 2011.
Important product markets in these applications will remain microprocessors, logic ICs, and memory (both Flash and DRAM). While the desktop market continues to mature, there are still significant opportunities in this market segment, primarily within the application markets for tablet PCs and new ultra-powerful portable computers or "Ultrabooks" both which are both expected to grow significantly this year.
Vizio Set To Enter PC Market
In January 2012 U.S.-based Vizio, an OEM best known for making an impression on the market with its line of inexpensive high-definition televisions, made an unexpected move when it announced it would enter the PC business with a range of thin-and-light laptops and all-in-one desktops set to be released sometime in 2012. The company is set to showcase the two new desktops and three new laptops, all of which run Microsoft’s Windows, at the January 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The firm claims it says it had worked on its computer designs for the past two years in an attempt to offer an aesthetic that competes with Apple’s popular PCs, but at a much lower price. The firm has managed to offer lower prices on its products by keeping a smaller staff and restricting the number of products it sells. Vizio also standardizes many parts across its product line, allowing it to buy parts in bulk for lower prices. These factors could allow the company to undercut its competitors' prices and potentially shake up the PC industry. In addition to a lower price point, Vizio is also working on creating companion software that will help its televisions share content and interact with its computers and tablets that are connected to a home network. The software, which Vizio claims will also be offered for competitors' laptops and tablets, is part of its larger strategy to tie its product lines all together. Even with all of this, the company faces a challenge being a late entrant into an already crowded marketplace, competing with the likes of HP, Toshiba, Apple, Dell, Acer, and Lenovo.
