Consumer Analog is a fast moving market. Products classified as consumer analog include audio amplifiers, audio CODECs, audio DACs, TV tuners, video CODECs, video amplifiers and buffers, and other consumer analog, such as motor controllers and integrated analog front-ends (AFE). Audio products are gaining share as the electronics industry transitions to more energy efficient and cost effective class D audio amplifiers. At the same time, electronics that previously had a single purpose are now including entertainment functionality such as the ability to play back audio and video.
This tracker provides market statistics for consumer analog products as they are used in all five market segments, not just consumer, including the fast growing tablet and smart phone segments.
Current Trends
Heading into 2012 the general semiconductor market remains weakened, particularly in the consumer segments, as sluggish consumer demand, slower overall economic growth, and high inventory levels will ensure that average selling prices of semiconductors will remain low through at least the first half of 2012. However, as the year continues on into the second half, many buyers could end up facing longer lead times and perhaps even higher prices if these high inventory levels are worked off, demand returns, and production capacity is slashed by suppliers. Another potential concern will be the reduction in capital spending by most chipmakers in 2011. Many suppliers slashed their cap ex budgets in 2011, and this lack of investment could eventually translate to lead times and higher prices for some parts. However, this may not make a noticeable effect until 2013 or beyond. The cap ex that remains will primarily be focused on providing leading-edge technology at the 20-nm and 28/32-nm levels.
Still, this weaknesses experienced by integrated device manufacturer (IDMs) should be balanced out by a greater reliance on outside foundry production for the production of components used in popular product categories, such as tablets and smartphones. In fact, top IC foundries TSMC and Intel’s Globalfoundries spent a considerable amount of cash on their foundries in 2011, which they will seek to utilize in 2012. Meanwhile Samsung has already declared its intentions to increase cap ex in 2012 for its foundry, NAND Flash, and OLED products. Despite the growth in production of components going into smartphones and tablets, demand for chips in HDTVs will continue to slide as TV sales are slowing and margins are shrinking.
