According to Brazil’s Electrical and Electronics Industry Association (ABINEE) employment in Brazil’s electronics and electrical industry was an estimated 159,800 in 2009, down from 161,900 a year earlier. ABINEE has around 650 members the sector accounting for 3.6% of GDP in 2009 down from 4.1% in 2008.
Currency movements have had a major impact on the dollar growth rate. Expressed in dollars, production increased by 15.0% and 16.7% respectively in 2007 and 2008 before declining by a forecasted 11.3% in 2009. In local currency production was significantly lower rising by 2.9% and 10.2% in 2007 and 2008 before declining by a forecasted 3.1% in 2009.
Production of computer hardware accounted for 54.5% of total output in 2008, having increased in dollars by 19% in both the prior two years. Output, however fell by 8% in 2009 the first decline since 2002.
