Since the communications led boom in 2000 output in the Canadian electronics industry has declined significantly with production falling by 57% from C$29 billion to a forecasted C$12.5 billion in 2009. Production declined by an estimated 1.0% in 2008 and is forecast to fall by 9.3% in 2009 as demand declined in the wake of the global economic downturn.
In 2008, capital expenditures in the ICT sector amounted to an estimated C$764 million for the year as a whole and up from C$742 million in 2008. However, expenditure is still well down on the C$1,754 million and C$1,845 million reported in 2001 and 2000, respectively. R&D expenditure for the ICT sector amounted to C$3.2 billion in 2008, up from C$3.1 billion a year earlier.
Canada's major industry sectors include fixed and wireless communications (including defence). Combined, the communication sector accounted for 46% of output in 2008 down from 62% in 2000. Production of communications and radar increased by 12.5% in 2008 but fell by a forecasted 9% in 2009. With demand rising in key export markets production is expected to increase by 3.2% in 2010. The decline in telecommunications has been more pronounced with the sector only recording growth in 2005, a modest 0.2%, since the peak in 2000. Between 2000 and 2009 output is forecast to fall by a staggering 89% a sharp contrast to wireless communications and radar where production is forecast to decline by 2.5% in the same period.
