According to the latest statistics at the end of 2008 there were 614 electronics manufacturing establishments in Hong Kong employing 9,951 people. After peaking in 2000 electronics output declined for the ninth consecutive year in 2009 falling by an estimated 10.6%. This compared to declines of 9.9% in 2008 and 10.6% in 2007. The decline in output reflects the shift in production to mainland China as Hong Kong companies look to regain competitiveness lost to rising personnel costs. The trend to migrate manufacturing to China will continue and result in electronics output falling by an estimated 8.1% in 2010.
Computer equipment and parts, once the largest sector, fell by a further 12.7% in 2008, telecommunications equipment by 14.3%, communications and radar by 0.3%, consumer by 14% and components by 8.7%.
The industry has set up a horizontal, intra-company system of labour division, concentrating higher value work in Hong Kong and assembly work in China. Of the major electronics companies headquartered in Hong Kong, around 90% have ties with China through subsidiaries, joint ventures, joint projects or subcontracting agreements.
