Expressed in US dollars production of electronic goods declined marginally in 2008 and compared to growth or 4.0% a year earlier. Double-digit growth in wireless communications was insufficient to offset declines in the computing, consumer and semiconductor sectors.
The manufacture of semiconductors is a major industry in South Korea and in 2008 semiconductors accounted for 37% of total output. South Korea had been home to more than 100 semiconductor-related companies with Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor (formed through the merger of Hyundai Electronics and LG Semicon in 1999) global leaders in the manufacture of memory chips. Semiconductor production, in response to a weakening market in the second half of the year declined by an estimated 8.6% in 2008. In 2009, output fell by a further 5.1% a marked improvement in the demand for memory chips in the second half of the year offsetting a weak start to the year. With memory driving growth in the global semiconductor market in the first half of 2010 production is forecast to increase by 28.8% for the year as a whole.
