New PublicationsOver recent years the Taiwanese electronics industry is in the process of undergoing a major structural change with the leading domestic companies relocating production offshore, and principally to China to reduce costs.
Semiconductor production represents the major sector of the Taiwanese electronics industry. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and United Microelectronics, the worlds leading semiconductor foundries are both Taiwanese companies with significant wafer fabrication capacity in the country. With Taiwan also having assembly, package, test and design capacity it is a major player throughout the semiconductor supply chain. Output increased by 22% in 2007, in part due to strong growth in the production of photovoltaic devices. In 2008, the decline in demand for semiconductors in the final quarter of the year had a marked impact on growth this despite continued growth in the production of photovoltaic devises, output increasing by 0.7% for the year as a whole. In 2009, the decline in the global semiconductor market resulted in semiconductor output falling by 10.4% despite a gradual recovery in the later part of the year. Semiconductor output is forecast to increase by 26.5% in 2010 as the global semiconductor market rebounds strongly from two consecutive years of decline.
