Electronics output in Thailand increased by an estimated 3.6% in 2008, this following growth of 2.4% in 2007 and 9.4% in 2006. In 2009, output declined by 3.2% the slowdown the result of weakening demand in the key semiconductor market in the second half of the year. Production is forecast to grow by 8.9% in 2010 with growth driven by the recovery in the semiconductor market and increased demand for computer and wireless communications.
The computer sector accounted for 48% of production in 2008, output increasing by 6.7% on the back of strong export growth. Production is expected to decline in 2009 although only modestly before posting growth of 8% in 2010.
Production of components accounted for 29% of total electronics output in 2008. Electronic component production, after declining modestly in both 2007 and 2008, declined by 6.5% in 2009 on the back of slowing demand in key export markets. Production is forecast to recover in 2010 with growth of 13.6%.
