The downturn in the electronics industry, which started in the final months of 2008, bottomed out in the first half of 2009 and has since shown a gradual recovery which has gained momentum in 2010, although there are still significant downside risks in particular in the advanced economies. As we enter the next cycle, growth will increasingly be focused on the emerging markets both in terms of production and markets. Although the USA has seen significant volume manufacturing moved offshore it will continue to exert a major influence in the production of electronics equipment and components. USA and Japan will also remain major the two countries accounting for around a third of the global market. To take advantage of the opportunities within the global electronics industry will require a clear understanding of the current structure of the global electronics industry, how it has developed on a country, regional and global level.
