By function, magnetic materials can be divided into soft magnetic materials and permanent magnet materials. In recent years, the rapid development of electronic information technology, consumer electronics and energy-saving & environmental protection fields has led to the continuous growth in the global output of magnetic materials. The global output of soft magnetic materials and permanent magnet materials rose from 230,000 tons and 580,000 tons in 2004 to 580,000 tons and 950,000 tons in 2010 respectively, with the respective annual compound growth rate of 16.7% and 8.6%.
China and Japan are major contributors to the global output of magnetic materials. At present, China accounts for about 60% of the global output. It is expected that China's output of soft magnetic materials and permanent magnet materials will reach 350,000 tons and 660,000 tons respectively in 2011.
In the field of permanent magnet materials, NdFeB permanent magnet materials (namely third-generation rare earth permanent magnets) have the most promising application prospect. At present, China's annual output of NdFeB permanent magnet materials is 82,000 tons, 25% of which are produced by the top 6 companies, presenting a very high degree of concentration in this field. In the field of soft magnetic materials, the production of soft magnetic ferrite materials is mainly concentrated in traditional medium and low-end sectors, and the concentration degree of this field is low, with top 10 companies only taking about 12% market shares.
This report analyzes the supply, demand and development prospect of magnetic materials in China and worldwide, studies five global companies (including TDK, Hitachi Metals and Arnold) and 10 Chinese companies (including Hengdian Group DMEGC Magnetics Co., Ltd., Beijing Zhong Ke San Huan High-Tech Co., Ltd. and Ningbo Yunsheng Co., Ltd.).
Considering the high production costs in developed countries, some well-known manufacturers of magnetic materials, such as TDK and Arnold, have transferred some capacity to China where abundant raw materials and low labor costs exist.
