Summary

Independent 5-year Consumer Electronics Industry Forecasts for Mexico

Mexico’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices, mobile handsets and AV products, is projected to be worth around US$11.0bn in 2011. In 2010 there was a rebound in consumer electronics sales, lifted by spending associated with the FIFA World Cup. Mexican growth will remain strong in 2011, as tax cuts in the US keep external demand strong and domestic credit growth finally gains traction.

The outlook for the Mexican consumer in 2011 remains mixed, with signs that Mexico’s export-led recovery may be faltering. Despite these challenges, analysts expect that consumer electronics demand to grow at a CAGR of 7.7% to US$14.8bn by 2015, led by demand for flat-screen TV sets, feature-rich notebooks and other key products, as well as product innovation and growing affordability.

Computers

Computer hardware accounted for around 56% of Mexico’s consumer electronics spending in 2010, with PC penetration around 20%. BMI forecasts Mexican computer hardware sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$6.2bn in 2011, after higher demand for computers helped to boost Mexican retail sales in 2010. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2011-2015 period is forecast at about 9.7%, driven by sales of notebooks and netbooks.

AV

AV devices accounted for around 16% of Mexico’s consumer electronics spending in 2010. Mexico’s domestic AV device market is projected at around US$1.8bn in 2011. Sales of digital TV sets and digital cameras are projected to drive AV spending growth at a projected CAGR of 5.9% between 2011 and 2015.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted for around 28% of Mexico’s consumer electronics spending in 2010. Following a recovery in 2010, Mexico’s market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.4% to US$3.6bn in 2015. Sales will be dominated by the replacement market, with growing demand for 3G handsets, and with smartphones forecast to comprise at least half of unit sales by 2015. In addition, nearly 40% of Mexican households do not currently have a mobile phone connection, making this segment a good target market for vendors.
