The microcontroller market is set to experience continued growth in 2012 thanks especially to growth of higher performance 32-Bit microcontrollers in the embedded markets of automotive, wireless, portable consumer, and industrial applications.

Microcontrollers (MCUs) are integrated circuits that act as a sort of simple computer, consisting internally of a relatively simple CPU, I/O ports, memory, clocks, and timers. NOR Flash or OTP ROM used as program memory is also often included on chip, as well as a small amount of RAM. Unlike the more expensive and complex microprocessors, which are typically found in applications such as PCs, microcontrollers are designed primarily for embedded applications.

For example, all automobiles contain microcontrollers, and many contain up to a dozen or more. In this application they control the engine, airbags, cruise control. Also, a great majority of consumer devices contain microcontrollers, especially those with a remote control. This includes TVs, DVD players, and stereos. Finally, they are widely used in portable devices, including mobile phones, digital cameras, and gaming devices.
