The mobile phone manufacturing industry in China is moving upmarket as makers veer away from low-end models and increase emphasis on advanced handsets to strengthen competitiveness and boost margins.

Suppliers are confident of export growth this year, riding on a 21 percent YoY increase in outbound shipments in the first half.
They expect overseas deliveries to hit 550 million to 600 million handsets by year-end. The aggregate shipments will account for 50 percent of the global total. The following are some of the key trends in China’s mobile phone industry:
• Features-rich models will drive product development in coming months as suppliers strengthen competitiveness. Dual-SIM phones, which currently dominate the output of white-box makers, will remain on the upswing. 3G and mobile TV handsets will likewise experience strong growth, with the latter moving toward digital transmission.
• In addition to value enhancements via new and advanced features, development efforts will be directed toward housing design innovations. Many companies will adopt more
affordable solutions to manage costs better without sacrifi cing quality.
• Makers reduced prices in recent months to boost sales amid the tightening price competition, which continues to be one of the major challenges for suppliers in the line. Adjustments, however, were kept to within 10 percent to avoid cutting into manufacturing costs.
• Increasing production expenses brought about by the labor and IC shortage could, however, push export quotes up in the months ahead. Increments will nevertheless be
minimal as companies avoid risking losing customers.
• Adding pressure to companies are stricter overseas quality standards, including environment-related regulations.
• Under efforts to bolster overseas business, manufacturers are increasing efficiency and undertaking costreduction programs. Many are broadening selections and reducing
defect rates to ensure high quality.
• Most suppliers will also be raising their capital expenditure to support R&D and production initiatives. A number of them are looking at a 50 percent increase.
