A lightning strike is capable of creating an electric field intensity in the range of hundreds of thousands of volts. If a wire is exposed to an electric-field intensity, it can develop an induced transient voltage. If this transient appears across an unprotected power, telephone, data or coaxial line, the result can be system destruction.
