After declining by over 17% in 2009 electronics output rebounded in 2010 on the back of the recovery in the global economy. However, growth has slowed significantly in the later part of 2011 on the back of deteriorating consumer and business confidence and the uncertainties around the future of the euro. Combined with the anticipated slowdown in the global economy the outlook for the first half of 2012 clearly remains uncertain with initial projections expecting the electronics industry to contract before recovering in the later part of the year.

In Western Europe, the electronics industry has virtually completed the transformation from high-volume to shorter run production. In the future emphasis will be on areas where Europe has strong global position such as industrial, medical, high-end communications and automotive. Germany, which led the recovery following the 2008/2009 recession, will once again play a key part in the expected rebound in 2013/2014. Exports to the emerging markets will also gain importance for manufacturers across Europe highlighting the global nature of the electronics industry.

Despite the short-term uncertainties West Europe will continue to provide significant opportunities across the electronics supply chain. To take advantage of these will require a clear understanding of the current structure of the West European electronics industry, how it has developed on a country and regional level and how it fits globally.

Extensive use is also made of research reports, company reports, news items and work by other consultants to supplement and cross check the official and semi-official sources.

Markets are forecast in real terms for the next five years, with production forecast for the next two years, using constant exchange rates and excluding inflation. These are based on our extensive knowledge of the historical performance of each product, the general economic outlook and the major growth influencing factors.
