The recovery in the global electronics industry from the 2008/2009 financial crisis and global downturn began in the second half of 2009 and gained momentum in the first half of 2010. Component shortages had a negative impact on growth although the situation eased towards the end of the year.

Growth in the electronics industry eased in the final months of 2010 and in 2011 demand for many products will be influenced by reduced government spending and weakening consumer confidence in particular in the more mature markets of Western Europe and the US. The emerging markets will show stronger growth boosted by increased consumer spending although this will be dampened by the expected reduction in exports.

The devastating and tragic earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan in March 2011 will have a negative impact, not only domestically but also globally however the full implications are not expected to be as bad as first feared. Despite the scale of the disaster and the initial problems of nuclear contamination and power shortages

Japanese companies have made a remarkable recovery with most facilities back on-line by May with production expected to be ramped-up to pre-quake levels by the end of the summer/early autumn. Although significant progress has been made concerns still remain with the prospects of certain component shortages extending through to the end of the year.
