Summary

The 2011 iNEMI Roadmap is the most comprehensive roadmap published to date by the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI). The complete roadmap report is available here. The document, created by individuals representing all aspects of the electronics manufacturing supply chain, features 27 chapters that provide in-depth discussion of six product sectors and 21 different  manufacturing, component/subsystem, business process and design technologies.

The roadmap identifies major trends in the evolution of Solid State Illumination, with an emphasis on identifying potentially disruptive events (business and technology). It provides the information needed to identify critical technology and infrastructure gaps, prioritize R&D needs to meet those gaps, and initiate activities that address industry needs.

Through its roadmaps, iNEMI charts future opportunities and challenges for the electronics manufacturing industry. These widely utilized roadmaps:

  • Help OEMs, EMS providers and suppliers prioritize investments in R&D
     and technology deployment

  • Influence the focus of university-based research

  • Provide guidance for government investment in emerging technologies

This Roadmap provides an overview of the most critical technologies necessary for commercial launch and market diffusion of SSI products.  This roadmap builds upon the 2010 version to bring a supply chain focus and industry needs assessment broader than that identified by the conventional materials and device roadmaps identified by government and university research communities.

Current Situation

  • The USDOE issues its “Solid State Lighting Research and Development: Multi-Year Program Plan, March 2010” and its “Solid State Lighting Research and Development: Manufacturing Roadmap, September 2009”.
  • In Europe, 7th FWP launches the OLED100.eu program in 2009 with the “… overall goal of OLED100.eu is to develop all the necessary technologies forming the basis for efficient OLED applications for the general lighting industry in Europe”.
  • In 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy announces the L Prize competition receives its first entrant, a product from Philips Electronics for replacing a 60-watt incandescent bulb.
  • Molex and Bridgelux announce a new modular light engine component utilizing a twist-lock socket system. Philips and GE announce similar approaches.
  • Zhaga consortium announced to create uniform module standards for LED light modules.
  • SSI device performance continues to improve.
  • The DOE CALiPER program continues to show improvements in luminaire performance against benchmarks and improvements in accuracy of manufacturer provided data.
  • Deployment of IES LM-80 LED package source and LM-79 LED luminaire testing protocols provides uniform testing and reporting standards. Further development of IES TM-21 for recommended forecasting of LED life from LM-80 test results is expected to provide guidance in performance comparisons.
  • The USDOE Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium is launched “to leverage the efforts of multiple cities pursuing evaluations of LED street lighting products”.
  • Mitsubishi Chemical Corp and Pioneer Corp have entered into an agreement to develop OLED lighting panels.
  • US DOE announces funding awards for SSL technology development.
  • The OLED100.eu program has received the First Place Award for its ICT contribution by showing that adoption of OLED lighting can lead to improvements in energy efficiency.
