The Turkish electronics industry is primarily focused on the computing and consumer video segments the two sectors accounting for 72% of electronics output in 2013. During the year growth in the computer segment offset lower output in the consumer video and helped contribute to a 2.7% growth in electronics output overall. Rising TV production combined with a further double-digit growth within the computer segment will result in electronics output accelerating to a forecasted 6.0% in 2014. Over the next few years the Turkish electronics industry will continue to be centred on the computer and consumer video segments the industry boosted by a large domestic market. The country’s leading TV manufactures will look to expand sales to the emerging markets to help offset the maturity in Western Europe where the focus will switch to replacement sales.

2014 witnessed a further year of slow or declining output across the Western European electronics industry. Hopes of a sustained recovery failed to materialise as the on-going problems in the Eurozone re-surfaced and economic growth stalled in the second half of the year. West European electronics industry output for electronic equipment declined by 0.2% in 2014 and followed a more substantial fall of 3.4% in the prior year. After three years however, there are once again signs that the economies of Western Europe are beginning to show the potential for a sustained economic recovery. In combination with demand from emerging markets, albeit at a potentially slower pace than in previous years, this should support a recovery in electronics output in 2015 with stronger growth in the second half of the year accelerating in 2016 and 2017.

South Korea on the back of its leading position in semiconductors, mobile communications and advanced consumer electronic products is the fourth largest electronics producer globally with output of US$117.2 billion in 2014.  After declining by 3.4% in 2012 electronics production rebounded in 2013 increasing by 8.9% on the back of strong growth in both the semiconductor and wireless communications segments. Growth eased in 2014 but still posted healthy growth estimated at 5.3% for the year as a whole with the main drivers again the semiconductor and wireless communications segments. For 2015, growth is expected to be more subdued at 1.6% as demand in the key semiconductor segment slows.

Yearbook of World Electronics Data extends our coverage to include several emerging markets, significantly China, Mexico and Turkey. Yearbook of World Electronics Data extends our coverage to include several emerging markets, significantly China, Mexico and Turkey. China now accounts for over a third of global electronics production and although growth will slow from the high double-digit rates seen in the recent past it will continue to attract inward investment and remain the center for high-volume production. Burgeoning domestic demand will also boost domestic production. The country however will face increasing pressures including escalating wages and potentially increased competition from other low-cost locations. Since the publication of the last edition Vietnam has made significant gains with the country now a centre for mobile phone production but will require significant investment in infrastructure and a major commitment by the leading EMS/ODMs to re-locate operations to the country. Mexico, due to its close proximity to the US has become a major center for the production of computer and consumer products and in particular TVs and mobile phones.
