Output for the French electronics industry declined by 2.2% in 2014, was flat in 2015 and fell by a forecasted 0.9% in 2016. The French electronics industry continues to be dominated by the production of fixed and wireless communications, the two product groups accounting for 22% of total output in 2015, down from around 37% at the height of the boom in 2000. The country is also a leading producer of radar, navigation and defence electronics the sector accounting for 25% of the total output in 2015. Increased spending in response to the current geopolitical situation in several regions globally and the growing threat of terrorism combined with the prospects of an increase in the US Defence Budget and rising demand from oil producing countries is expected to benefit the French defence industry. Production of computer equipment has declined year on year since 2000 a trend which is expected to continue. By the end of 2017, output is forecast to account for 3.8% of electronics output down from 17.6% in 2000 the sector experiencing mid-single-digit declines in both 2016 and 2017. The electronic component segment has been restructured in recent years with the closure of a number of manufacturing plants. In 2015, output declined by 1.9% and is expected to show a further decline of 4.4% in 2016 and 0.4% in 2017.
