After dipping to Euro 20.95 billion in 2014, its lowest level since 2000, output in the French electronics industry posted four years of consecutive growth to reach Euro 23.45 billion in 2018 and is forecast to increase by a further 1.2% in 2019, and compared to growth of 3.3% in the prior year and 5.4% in 2017. The French electronics is dominated by the production of fixed and wireless communications, the two product groups accounting for 19.7% of total output in 2018, down from around 37% at the height of the boom in 2000. The country is also a leading producer of radar, navigation and defence electronics the sector accounting for 26.5% of total output in 2018. The production of computer equipment has declined year on year since 2000 a trend which is expected to continue. By the end of 2019, output is forecast to account for 2.8% of total electronics output down from 17.6% in 2000 the sector experiencing declines of 14.3% in 2017 and 3.0% in 2018. Electronic component production, despite the recent closure of a number of manufacturing plants, accounted for 27.0% of electronics production in 2018. In both 2017 and 2018 the semiconductor and passive components segments benefited from higher average selling prices, fuelled by component shortages and buoyant demand.
