In 2017 the Indian electronics industry posted its third year of double-digit growth a trend which is expected to continue in 2018. Growth in the electronics industry is being supported by favourable government policies including the “Make in India” programme and the adoption of the National Policy on Electronics with the aim “to create a globally competitive electronics design and manufacturing industry to meet the county’s needs and serve the international market”.
Although impacted by the increased penetration of smartphones the production of computers and related equipment increased by an estimated 5.0% in 2017 and compared to the 2.5% increase reported a year earlier. In 2018, production is forecast to increase at similar levels to 2017 the sector accounting for 10.9% of production at the end of the forecast period. The production of LCD TVs amounted to around 16 million units in 2017 and has been boosted by the introduction of import duties in 2013/2014 although the focus is on low-level assembly.
The production of mobile phones has benefited from the “Make in India” campaign with around 175 million produced in 2016/2017, up from 110 million in 2015/2016. Additional investments in 2018 including Xiaomi through its partner Foxconn and Samsung Electronics will help boost production.
