Nanomaterials are increasingly becoming part of our daily lives. The properties of metal oxide nanoparticles (also referred to as nanopowders or nanocrystals) display enhanced electrical, optical, magnetic and chemical properties from the bulk material of which they are made. Most manufactured nanoparticles are available in varying sizes, shapes and as surface coatings. They offer a range of functionalities that are desirable in a number of sectors such as anti-bacterialism, anti-corrosion, easy-clean, thermal barrier, protective and UV-absorbent and combinations thereof.
In the coatings sector, aluminium and aluminium oxide nanoparticles are used for corrosion, scratch and wear resistance and display high thermal barrier properties as well as being superhydrophobic; in composites they provide high barrier, durability, fire retardancy, stiffness, thermal fatigue resistance, fracture toughness, creep resistance and wear resistance. Tensile strength is increased by factors of 2-4.
Recent applications include oil and gas aluminium drill pipelines. Application of aluminium oxide nanofluids in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has also been increasing in the recent years. The ability of nanoparticles to alter certain factors in the formation and in oil properties can enhance recovery.
