Independent 5-year Consumer Electronics Industry Forecasts for Singapore

Singapore's consumer electronics market will continue to be lucrative for vendors, with high levels of spending per capita a feature of the market due to high incomes, a strong economic outlook, consumer demand for the latest devices and short replacement cycles. However, in terms of spending growth Singapore has one of the weaker outlooks in APAC as a result of the maturity of the market. There is high penetration of desktops, notebooks, digital cameras and flat-screen TVs, as well as for new device categories such as smartphones and tablets, meaning the Singapore market has passed through the period of strongest growth associated with rapidly rising penetration . There is upside potential if wearable computing devices prove mass market appeal in Singapore, or if uptake of Ultra-HD TV sets exceeds our expectation for it to be a high-income niche product.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Computer Hardware Sales: USD2.07bn in 2014 to USD2.06bn in 2015, -0.5% in US dollar terms. The decline in tablet volumes, combined with a mature desktop and notebook market mean value growth opportunities are limited but the market will remain lucrative in per capita terms.

AV Sales: USD798mn in 2014 to USD793mn in 2015, -0.7% in US dollar terms. The TV market is mature and price erosion will drag on value growth, but we expect the digital camera market will begin to stabilise from 2015.

Handset Sales: USD978mn in 2014 to USD1.0bn in 2015, +2.9% in US dollar terms. We believe the handset market has reached a plateau with smartphone penetration of 75% at YE14 and growth will underperform the majority of the APAC region 2015-2018.
