Increasing number of smart handheld devices has brought mobile broadband flooding; the amount of data traveling on the allocated spectrum is causing bandwidth issues and has resulted in poor quality of service by telecom providers and the increasing number of buildings has created blind spots and coverage issues. Telecom operators are now looking for cheap solutions to increase the quality of service, provide better coverage area, and improve the capacity of the network.

Small cells address the capacity issues faced by telecom operators and help to extend the capacity by using Ethernet/fiber cabled connections on the premises via Wi-Fi, which is integrated into small cells. Small cells extend the coverage and capacity of the carrier network at indoor and outdoor locations by extending the coverage of the macro cell in the premises by using a base station for network coverage and by utilizing the already deployed Ethernet connection for data offloading. Small cells can be deployed in residential premises, enterprise complexes, and public locations. Small cells use Ethernet connectivity for data offloading from licensed spectrum to the unlicensed spectrum using the Wi-Fi technology. Small cells also provide whole new revenue of streams to the telecommunication operators by providing various analytics about the subscribers. Small cells expand the carrier network’s coverage and capacity at a fraction of cost, in comparison to installing a new macro cell. Small cells have compact form factor and can be easily placed anywhere and can be powered easily as these devices consume very less power.

Small cells cater to the subscriber demand of higher bandwidths and more data transfer speed along with improved carrier network coverage. These devices also feature multivendor interoperability, self-configuring options, self-optimizing network systems, and a network management system to reduce interference from other devices. Small cells improve the quality of service and provide better customer experience.

Small cells are increasingly being adopted by the telecom operators around the world. Major telecom operators such as Verizon, Vodafone, Sprint, and SK Telecom have already deployed small cells. The major players in the small cells space are Cisco, Alcatel-Lucent, ip.access, SpiderCloud, Contela, Samsung, and NEC Corporation.

Due to exponential increase in mobile data traffic on the network, telecommunication service providers are unable to cater the current capacity demands due to limitation of available spectrum. The increasing penetration of smart devices such as mobile phones and tablets has increased the amount of mobile data traveling on the network and this amount is set to grow exponentially by 2018. The telecommunication service providers are also facing the network coverage issues within buildings and city limits. These small cells come in a compact form and are easy to install, consume less power that can be supplied by using Power-Over-Ethernet (POE) technology, can be deployed indoors and outdoors, and require only Ethernet connectivity for connecting to the mobile network. The small cells provide mobile network operators with the option of offloading the mobile data on to unlicensed spectrum through Wi-Fi and provide coverage using the licensed spectrum. Small cells enable the mobile network operators to use carrier Wi-Fi for mobile data as well as provide network coverage throughout the city by eliminating all the blind spots. The small cells extend the coverage and capacity of the network to accommodate the growing amount of mobile data and provide extended network coverage along with greatly reducing the capital and operational expenditure in comparison to traditional macro cells.

The traditional approach used for extending the network coverage is by installing new macro cells; however, this approach requires huge capital and operational expenditure along with large areas for installation. The area required by the macro cells poses the biggest restraint within the city limits for adding macro cells. On the other hand, small cells are easily deployable and can be placed on walls, street lamps, traffic signals, and other such sites. Small cells market is gaining traction due to its attractiveness in terms of economics and easy deployment. Small cells are presenting the mobile network operators with new revenue streams by providing deeper analytics about the customers and also by reducing the total cost of ownership per bit carried across the network.
