This study presents the five-year forecast for U.S. smartphone shipments by device vendors. The worldwide smartphone market will reach a total of 171.0 million units shipped in 2015, up 5.6% from the 161.9 million units shipped in 2014. Many of the same drivers will be in play: broad and deep selection of smartphones from which to choose, prices fitting nearly every budget, and a steady refresh rate throughout the forecast period. By 2019, total smartphone shipment volumes will reach 182.2 million units, resulting in a five-year CAGR of 2.4%.
The future of the smartphone market is sound. What will bear close observation is the constantly shifting operating system landscape, and how they target different market segments. Android is poised as a solution spanning all segments of the market, while iOS targets the high end and Windows Phone the entry level and midrange. The tight focus of BlackBerry on the enterprise will limit its opportunities, but nonetheless, it will be a viable solution. Moreover, with fewer new users left in the U.S. market, the focus shifts to maintaining current user bases while stealing from other platforms.
