This study examines the hard disk drive component market for the period from 2015 to 2019. The demand for HDDs for enterprise applications remains solid, with HDD petabytes shipped for enterprise applications growing at a 31.3% 2014–2019 CAGR. However, HDD areal density is growing at a slower pace than the enterprise HDD petabyte shipment growth rate. Because of these differing growth rates, enterprise HDD unit shipments will increase, and HDD suppliers will be required to use a higher number of heads and disks per drive to increase the capacity of an enterprise HDD. As a result, the demand for HDD components for the enterprise HDD segment will increase. In contrast, the demand for other HDD segments will steadily contract.
