This study is a translation of the Japanese document that analyzes the current situation on IoT spending and forecasts the spending from 2017 to 2021 in the IoT market for the four technology groups further divided into technical elements (a total of 10 elements), while focusing on the "key use cases" (a total of 36 applications) as defined by IDC. This study also provides recommendations to vendors involved in the IoT business.

Since it is extremely difficult to determine the ROI before implementation, an approach in which companies will determine the ROI to a certain extent in the process of utilizing sophisticated systems, such as IoT, high level analytics, and cognitive and artificial intelligence (AI) systems, in actual operation will be essential in continuing the implementation and operation of these systems. Similarly, an approach of repeated trial and error and to concentrate on requirements step by step are also essential to generate new business model ideas and formulate measures for data security. Thus, it is crucial for vendors to start raising the awareness of such agile thinking among the management level in companies so that the mindset will penetrate as corporate climate under the strong leadership of managers.
